Dear AR Community,

On Tuesday night at our regular FUHSD Board Meeting the board reviewed the proposed AR Registration Guide and heard public comment from over a dozen of our community members. Regardless of where anyone stands on the proposed policies, I was heartened by the turnout and passion that our students and families have for this school and I am encouraged that we are getting closer to adopting a more equitable and manageable advising protocol that we can agree on as a community.

This effort will take more time. The FUHSD Board did not approve the College Registration Guide as proposed and has requested that the Guide go under a deliberate revision process before returning to the Board for approval later in the fall semester. As a part of this process Superintendent Clint Duey and I will be arranging a workshop with parents and students, AR staff, a board representative, and a CR representative where ideas, concerns and proposals can be shared.

In the meantime, I have consulted with Superintendent Duey and we will be operated under the following registration policies:

  • 11th grade students will be allowed to register for up to 11 CR units per semester this school year. Existing policies regarding college class eligibility, limits on units for a student's first college course bearing semester regardless of grade level, and seat time requirements remain in place. CR's Concurrent Enrollment policies will be adhered to as always. Any 11th grade student who plans on registering for an additional class must email the course information to Brooke Martin (bmartin@fuhsdistrict.net) and I along with their new proposed schedule.
  • All CR class registration will continue to be at the discretion of AR's Academic Advising Team per agreements established in our MOU with College of the Redwoods. Appeals to registration denials will first go to me and then to Superintendent Duey if necessary.
  • Online classes will still be limited to one with narrow exceptions and if in-person options are available those classes will take precedence over online options.

While the implementation of our first College Registration Guide has not gone as smoothly as we may have hoped, I believe that we are on the right track and the Board has encouraged the effort that we are taking in this regard. We are looking forward to a more sustainable program once this process is completed. There will be more information regarding a College Registration Guide Workshop coming soon and don't forget to put AR Advising Night on your calendar for Thursday, September 7th from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM in the CR Theater! Thank you for your understanding and please reach out to me or Superintendent Duey if you have any questions or concerns. Have a great rest of your summer and see you in August!

Sincerely,

Arnold King
